June 1981 -- more wonderful Medley

Last year they played the countdown JUST before this, so I talked about the trends with lots of country and jazz/pop.  The VJs noted that especially since clearly MTV had not debuted yet.

Last week's big movers settle down, but in week 13, Jessie's Girl finally hits the top 10, but it won't hit #1 until week 19, a very long time for a pop hit.

Meanwhile, a relatively rare feat for most of the 80's with Stars on 45 Medley interrupting Bette Davis Eyes long run at #1.  It kept Kim Carnes from tying the long standing record for weeks at #1 and gave the ultimate year-end race for #1 a little more drama as "Endless Love" also held for 9.

The Medley was not unusual for being a mix of other artists' songs, but it had by far the most to date of any top 40 hit and still holds the record for longest title of a #1 hit and the one with the most independent compositions.  It spun off subsequent top 40 hits featuring swing, classical, and (their own) Stevie Wonder Medley.  The Beach Boys and the Beatles themselves also charted medleys of their own hits in the next year.

First hit:  many, but few long-standing artists.  Most notable: Billy Squier, Juice Newton (hanging on)
Comeback:  Gary US Bonds (17 year absence)
Last hit:  Pure Prairie League

Favorite:  (5-stars):  Gemini Dreams, Bette Davis Eyes, Sweetheart, I Love You, Take it On the Run, What are we doing in love, and my favorite:  Being With You
