June 1978 -- the RSO rein continues

1978 was the year of Saturday Night Fever, and along with it, the RSO record label which released it.  From 24 Dec 1977 through July, all but three weeks at #1 were held by RSO artists -- the Bee Gees, Yvonne Elliman, Player, Andy Gibb, and the Grease soundtrack songs.  The longest stretch was 21 weeks in a row, ended by Wings.
So, a lot of disco on this countdown, though not all was huge -- KC and the sunshine band had one of their random flops, only peaking at #35.  #37 sounded just like them too, and he got no higher.
Strangely unheard:  Roberta Flack, Rare Earth (a flop of a comeback), and Patti Smith's song, which I knew well as the 10,000 Maniacs songs from the 90's.
Stuck at #2 -- Gerry Rafferty, who stayed there 4 weeks, which got some press at the time.
First hit (of many): Genesis, Meat Loaf, Robert Palmer
Last hit (of many): Rare Earth
Favorites: (4-star) Abba, Andy Gibb, Wings, Donna Summer, Frankie Valli, Bonnie Tyler -- and the best:  Barry Manilow, though it was about to be eclipsed by Copacabana

June 1985 -- you know them all!

A definite peak time for 80's stations -- looking down this list, virtually every song in the top 20 would be very comfortable on such a station.  Notable exception -- the Mary Jane Girls, a one-hit wonder on the pop charts, and a catchy one, but rarely heard -- produced by Rick James who never did have a top 10 in his own name.

The VJs also picked on #15 as an embarrassing parody of a Cyndi Lauper record, alas done by Cyndi Lauper herself.

The bottom 20 though has some you likely haven't heard since the 80's -- the last top 40 hits for Kim Carnes, Air Supply, Supertramp, and (barring the novelty one-off Kokomo) the Beach Boys.  That's quite a list for a single top 40 chart.

And look at the debuts -- from no less than Whitney Houston to one- (or nearly one-) hit wonder icons:  Til Tuesday, Dead or Alive, Limahl, and Harold Faltermeyer.

By this week in 1985, we hadn't had a long-lasting #1 since 1983, so I was ready for "Shout" to do the trick, but there were just too many other big radio songs -- it only was #1 for 3 weeks.

Favorite:  despite the iconic songs, most of these are far from my favorites by these artists.  No 5-stars... so I'll go with Katrina and the Waves.

June 1975 -- Some mid-70's icons

Great countdown today with some iconic mid-70's songs -- the disco classic "The Hustle," Elton John's patriotic ode "Philadelphia Freedom," Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy," John Denver "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" and at #1 the song of the year, "Love Will Keep Us Together"
As that quintet reveals, it was another big mix of music at the dawn of the disco era.  Classic R&B was still doing fine (including Earth Wind and Fire's only #1, along with early 70's adult contemporary (America), and some 60's greats (Smokey, Gladys, various Beatles, and the King).

June 1981 -- more wonderful Medley

Last year they played the countdown JUST before this, so I talked about the trends with lots of country and jazz/pop.  The VJs noted that especially since clearly MTV had not debuted yet.

Last week's big movers settle down, but in week 13, Jessie's Girl finally hits the top 10, but it won't hit #1 until week 19, a very long time for a pop hit.

Meanwhile, a relatively rare feat for most of the 80's with Stars on 45 Medley interrupting Bette Davis Eyes long run at #1.  It kept Kim Carnes from tying the long standing record for weeks at #1 and gave the ultimate year-end race for #1 a little more drama as "Endless Love" also held for 9.

The Medley was not unusual for being a mix of other artists' songs, but it had by far the most to date of any top 40 hit and still holds the record for longest title of a #1 hit and the one with the most independent compositions.  It spun off subsequent top 40 hits featuring swing, classical, and (their own) Stevie Wonder Medley.  The Beach Boys and the Beatles themselves also charted medleys of their own hits in the next year.

First hit:  many, but few long-standing artists.  Most notable: Billy Squier, Juice Newton (hanging on)
Comeback:  Gary US Bonds (17 year absence)
Last hit:  Pure Prairie League

Favorite:  (5-stars):  Gemini Dreams, Bette Davis Eyes, Sweetheart, I Love You, Take it On the Run, What are we doing in love, and my favorite:  Being With You

June 1989 -- Slow awful songs with some upbeat winners

Wow -- what a bad run the charts were in as the decade closed.  When Donny Osmond can hit #2 on the charts, and you can't even tell it's him singing, you know it's bad.  Ditto with celebrities (Michael Damien), re-releases (Benny Mardones, Real Life), bite-the-hand-that-feed-you (John Mellencamp), and copycats (Warrant).  Or not one but all sorts of artists from the 60's & 70s (McCartney, Natalie Cole, Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks, Osmond, Donna Summer), most on a last gasp.

Big Hair rock wasn't having a great week, despite lots of entries (GnR, Bon Jovi, Great White, Warrant, Cinderella)...again, all out-charted by Donny Osmond.

It's not like there was nothing new -- this was after all the year that Bobby Brown, Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, and New Kids on the Block all debuted to 5+ hit singles apiece from their first albums, but this week, these were not the best songs by the new artists.  Plus it was also the year of the painful slow (Bette Midler, Simply Red, Damien, NKOTB...)

And it's not like it was a wasteland -- just the sheer number of bland to bad's is in particular relief to the good ones:

Favorites:  Expose, Nenah Cherry, GnR, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna (all 4-star).  Honors to the only 5-star...Donna Summer with a dated production, terrible video, but great singing.  It's her last top 10.

June 1977 -- a Chart Full of #1s

Great countdown today from June 1977 -- the more embarrassing and quirky songs from the early part of the 70's are gone, disco is reigning, but with plenty of room for pop, adult contemporary, classic rock, yacht rock, country, country rock, and R&B, mixed and mingled from the bottom to the top of the chart....but

Stevie Wonder plummeted from #1 -- outside of a stretch in late 1973, dropping even to #5 from #1 was very strange, but he was overtaken by 5 songs that would hit #1 (I bet that's a record!)  Still, he was the only multi-week #1 in a stretch of 14 #1 songs!  All in all, 12 songs that had or would hit #1 were on this chart, again, likely a record...6 other songs would hit #1 before Andy Gibb would make it in late July.  And once he did, a mere 9 songs would hit #1 through next May!

Throwbacks from last week's 1970 broadcast: another concurrent charting of two versions of the same song, which Casey again didn't mention -- Theme from Rocky.  Last time it was "I Don't Know How to Love him  by Yvonne Elliman and Helen Reddy, who both happen to chart this week.

So many of these songs are still well known and timeless ("Margaritaville"), that some of the others stand out as especially not aging well:  Undercover Angel (creepy), Ain't Gonna Bump No More, High School Dance (with the super-clunky lyric "We're gonna dance at the high school dance")

And despite its fame and popularity, "Lucille" really sounded odd amidst the other songs in the top 10.

Never heard before (big artists):  Hall & Oates "Back Together Again," Chaka Khan
First timers:  Pablo Cruise, Andy Gibb, Waylon Jennings, Shaun Cassidy
Last hit: Helen Reddy
Double counted:  the Eagles, for the 2nd time this year

Favorites:  4-star:  Manilow, Gibb, Foreigner, Marshall Tucker, Stevie Wonder, and Abba but the only 5-star missed #1, "My Heart Belongs to Me."

2022 UPDATE:  I heard the chart 2 after this, and "Dreams" had fallen from #1, with Casey noting it was their biggest hit to date.  What he didn't know is that despite dozens more hits as a group and solo that none of them would hit #1 again.  He also didn't know how huge Andy Gibb was going to get...or about his untimely death just a few years later, like with Marvin Gaye.

June 1987 -- Good solid chart, with some late-80's bad and ugly

It's a later-in-the-decade countdown, so I'm not normally too excited, but this week's charts started with an awful lot of good songs, particularly ones not too overplayed -- Partland brothers, David Bowie, Eddie Money, Billy Idol, Crowded House, Tom Petty, Bruce Hornsby, Breakfast Club, Madonna, Company B.  There are also the too-often-played iconic 80's songs that I still happen to like a lot -- T'Pau, Cutting Crew, Whitney, Bob Seger, Heart, Jody Watley.

Overall, it gets worse as we climb the chart -- I've liked Kim Wilde, but 2-8 do little for me, or are terrible (Lady in Red, joining Huey Lewis and Poison

First hit:  Jody Watley, Glenn Medeiros, Poison (ushering in big-hair copycat music), Kenny G (ushering in the a/c era)
First release after huge album:  Heart (who did well), Bryan Adams (who did OK)
Hitmakers from 1970 or earlier:  Herb Alpert, Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon, Chicago

Favorite: Heart, with Seger to follow.

June 1971 -- The Countdown where Casey talked about Jesus

We're back in the first year of American Top 40, Casey's voice sounded unnaturally deep, and he's talking about Jesus!  While much of the countdown was the usual mix of R&B, political commentary, adult contemporary, and some rock, it was also during the Jesus People movement of the early 70's.  Three songs were from "Jesus Christ Superstar," with the title song getting an interesting explanation from Casey about Judas Iscariot wrestling with who Jesus was.  After that was the 2nd of two versions of "I Don't Know How to Love Him" (which Casey oddly did not acknowledge) and then "Put Your Hand in the Hand" which is about trusting Jesus also, "the man who calmed the sea."

Less of a big deal, but Michael Jackson and rival Donny Osmond were back to back.  And clearly not-rivals Bread and the Doors were too :-)

I was a long way up the countdown thinking how few songs I recognized, or how few went on to be big hits.  Ends up Carole King was about to rule for awhile, followed by the Raiders.  And speaking of strangely unheard songs, the first 5 had hits by Smokey Robinson, Chicago, and Diana Ross -- all unfamiliar.

First hit:  Carly Simon debuts!

Not a great countdown for favorites, especially since I didn't even know so many.  The only song with even 4 stars was "It's Too Late."

May 1972 -- who would you guess would last?

I wrote about this period a year ago, but what jumped out at me this time was the big debut of "Amazing Grace," still inexplicable, but it bounded over the classic "Rocket Man" and "Lean on Me."

Also, the original Harry hit was near it's peak...a not very high one given that it spawned a Sequel in 1980.

May 1982 -- my first Sirius AM re-broadcast, but a different impression

In my 2 years of listening to Sirius XM, this is the first repeated chart I remember -- I even blogged about it.  At the time, I talked about how SLOW everything was.
This time I noticed the rather stunning musical whiplash on the chart.  Human League and Soft Cell are bringing new wave music into the mainstream...alongside some of the toughest music of the early 80's (Joan Jett, Aldo Nova), country ballads (Willie, Eddie Rabbitt), crazy 50's retro (Simon and Garfunkel live (?!?!), Paul Davis), and a classical movie theme that went to #1 (Vangelis).
All that alongside the before-noted slowest songs of the era.  A total mess of a chart, but what how much better than the homogenized music of later in the decade.
First hits:  Asia, Atlantic Starr,
Last: Franke and the Knockouts, Simon and Garfunkel, Donnie Iris
