I heard bits and pieces of this countdown, yet it still had a few notable moments.
There were two songs by huge artists that I'd never heard -- Diana Ross and Paul McCartney.
"Desiree" was the first song I heard on the radio that I liked enough to want to purchase. I ended up getting Neil Diamond's album, disappointed that "Desiree" wasn't the title track. It held his solo version of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" which was mashed with Barbra Striesand's version to become a #1 hit.
Dan Hill's big hit was bounding up the chart, notably jumping over "Stayin' Alive" but that wasn't to last. The latter spent 4 weeks at #1, while Hill spent none.
Elvis was at #22, the last time he ever charted this high. It sounded completely weird on a chart full of current songs. Just above it is "I Go Crazy" which at 20 weeks was only half way through its chart run.
Two teen idols were in the upper half -- Shaun Cassidy and Lief Garrett.
And RSO label had the top 2 songs...they would reign for the first half of the year with a chain of hits!
Favorites: all the Gibb brothers touched: Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Samantha Sang... plus Paul Davis.
Winner: Ah-ah-ah-ah Stayin Alive!
