Replacing the (debatably) first disco song to hit #1 ("Rock the Boat") is the 2nd -- "Rock your Baby" -- bow, plenty of non-disco songs hit #1 in the next 5 years, but this really noted the beginning of the Disco Era that so dominated pop music in the late 70's. And interesting that these trailblazers went on to such modest success.
In contrast, the charts (as noted by this guy) were filled with much adult contemporary pop, including the especially embarassing Anne Murray song at #8 and weak #1's of "the Night Chicago Died" and "Billy, Don't be a Hero."
First hit (of many) -- Abba, the Commodores, Jimmy Buffett, Rufus (f/ Chaka Khan)
Last -- Jim Croce :'-(, in his very last week in the top 40
Strangely never heard: Elvis
